1.26. Thereafter, Arjuna, the son of Pritha, beheld stationed in both armies, fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, as well as friends, fathers-in-law, and well-wishers.

1.26. Explanation—'tatra apashyat... senayor ubhayor api'—When the Lord said to Arjuna, "Behold the Kurus assembled here on this battlefield," Arjuna's gaze fell upon his kinsmen stationed in both armies. He saw that in those armies, for the purpose of battle, standing in their respective positions were uncles like Bhurishrava and others, who are like fathers to me. Grandfathers like Bhishma and Somadatta are standing. Preceptors (teachers of knowledge and family gurus) like Drona and Kripa are standing. Maternal uncles like Purujit, Kuntibhoja, Shalya, Shakuni, etc., are standing. Brothers like Bhima, Duryodhana, etc., are standing. Sons of mine and my brothers, like Abhimanyu, Ghatotkacha, Lakshmana (son of Duryodhana), etc., are standing. Sons of Lakshmana and others are standing, who are my grandsons. Friends of Duryodhana, like Ashvatthama, etc., are standing, and similarly, friends from my own side are also standing. Fathers-in-law like Drupada, Shainya, etc., are standing. Well-wishers like Satyaki, Kritavarma, etc., who desire the welfare of their respective sides without any motive, are also standing.
