O Krishna! When unrighteousness prevails, the women of the family become corrupted; and O Varshneya! When women are corrupted, intermixture of castes arises.
Commentary: "When unrighteousness prevails, O Krishna... the women of the family become corrupted" — By observing dharma, the inner heart is purified. When the inner heart is purified, the intellect becomes sattvic. In a sattvic intellect, the discernment of what ought to be done and what ought not to be done remains awake. However, when unrighteousness increases in the family, conduct becomes impure, due to which the inner heart becomes impure. When the inner heart is impure, the intellect becomes tamasic. When the intellect becomes tamasic, a person begins to regard what is not his duty as his duty, and his duty as not his duty; that is, thoughts contrary to scriptural injunctions begin to arise in him. Due to this perverse intellect, the women of the family become corrupted, meaning, adulterous. "When women are corrupted, O Varshneya, intermixture of castes arises" — When women are corrupted, intermixture of castes is born (see note p. 29). When a man and a woman of different castes unite, the offspring born from them is called 'varna-sankara' (of mixed caste).
Here, by addressing Him as 'Krishna', Arjuna is saying: You are called 'Krishna' because You attract all; so please tell us, towards which direction will You attract our family, meaning, where will You lead us? The intent behind addressing Him as 'Varshneya' is: You are called 'Varshneya' because You took birth in the Vrishni dynasty. But when our family (lineage) is destroyed, in which family will our descendants be known? Therefore, it is not proper to destroy the family.
